My guess is that this is a way to explain that grampa was so goodlooking, not only did he give gramma 7 kids, but a few of her neighbors, a lady from WWII, and a black lady. My gramma got even by sleeping with two of his brothers and a neighbor.....and .....no one wants to face the truth? Anybody? Or just me😅 Not the mention that gramma had 17 siblings and grampa had about the same.

Is there a way to extract 1840 and 1830 census data using a 2019 version of Excel? I watched one of your videos in January 2023 and was able to successfully use your method on my Windows 10 or 11 computer for the 1850-1910 censuses. When I try it now, it puts all of the information in one column. I use the "Paste Special", then "Text" method.

For Australian Ancestry members the ProTools feature for Enhanced Shared matches is not available yet. Ancestry say they are aiming for the end of June however they could not be certain of that. I found that out the hard way. I have paused my subscription until that is ready as I don't think the other features are worth the additional fee.

I have found ThruLines very frustrating. It makes it easy to add to your tree however it also makes it very easy for people to copy other peoples bad research incorrectly. I have a situation where a number of people have copied a family into their tree missing a whole generation. However I cannot use Thru Lines in that part of my tree because I am descended from the missed generation The son has the same name as his father. So the son's daughter has been added as daughter of her grandfather. I have included copies of wills and comments from Ancestry as evidence to clearly prove this but that does not change ThruLines. And I have found people will most likely ignore it rather than try to fix their tree.

Is Pro Tools available now in Australia 22 June 24? I received a hint on my matches that I could sign up for Pro Tools which I did however it does not work. I specifically wanted the Enhanced Shared Matches Tool otherwise I would not have bothered. I have followed the instructions to use that tool, logged out and back in again, but it does not do anything that I could not do before. So disappointed. Customer Service is virtually non existent on Ancestry.

20th-century physicians who calculated age-at-death for death certificates did not have ChatGPT. 18th-century stone masons carving gravestones did not have computers. They instead generally calculated the age-at-death with the simplifying assumption that each month had 30 days. Therefore, to reverse this calculation today, one should use the same assumption.

She is listed in a home, working as a housekeeper, at 17 years old, it doesn’t have any info on her parents other than that they were born in Tennessee. Connie awesome video and definitely food for thought, but i do have question on the 1880 Census and it deals with my 3rd Great Grandmother. She died in 1875 of which she was about 63 years old when she passed. So at the top of the 1880 Census Record there is a note b that talks about death of people and recording them on the Census Record. Does this mean if she is dead and during the half way mark of when Census Records are taken every ten years, would she be recorded on the 1880 Census Record even though she passed away 5 years earlier 🤔 ? I just want to make sure that i am comprehending this correctly. Just do not want to assume anything. Thanks again for this video...awesome tips

Hi Cindy. Thanks for the compliments. There are mortality schedules for years 1850-1900, however, it was only for those people who died within that previous 365 days from the official census date. So if a person died in say Sept. 1879 and the official census date for the 1880 census was June 1st, 1880, then they should be listed in the mortality schedule that was published in 1880. So in your case there would not be a census notation of their death. Look to other records for evidence of death, Find A Grave, Billion Graves, Church Records, etc.

I use ChatGPT 4o A LOT for genealogy work (as well as so many other things). A really helpful tip is to have it decipher old documents, transcribe and/or translate them for you. I found it remarkable at figuring out doctor scribbles for causes of death on death certificates as well as names on many other documents. Even if you are just focused on a small bit of text to understand, upload the entire document to ChatGPT so it can use all the character styles in the document to determine what your mystery text is. It detects the style of handwriting and makes determinations as to what was being written in your mystery text. VERY helpful.

Instead of glorifying all their new stuff, how about griping about the things that have ben broken for years? Like the fact that 1/4 to 1/3 of the pages I open on Ancestry come back with some version of "Sorry! That's not working right now!". I'm PAYING for this, why do we tolerate it NOT WORKING and have to refresh the page 5 or 6 times (waiting a few minutes between refreshes) until it loads? This is UTTERLY UNACCEPTABLE for a company that keeps developing new stuff.

To calculate approximate birth dates, I have created an Open Office workbook (Excel has some issues when using dates), which I called before-After event, which will calculate birth dates if they were born before or after the event. I list the age on all documents on one sheet for a person. I have made a template, so when I want to want to add a person, I copy the template with all of my calculations. For example: This is John Rennick in Scotland: Year if born Event Age Event Date Year before Event after Event Birth Place Occupation 1st Marriage 22 Jan 30 1857 1835 1834 Coal Miner 1861 Census 25 Apr 07 1861 1836 1835 Ireland Coal Miner 1871 Census 35 Apr 02 1871 1836 1835 Ireland Coal Miner 2nd Marriage 45 Apr 18 1879 1834 1833 Coal Miner 1881 Census 46 Apr 03 1881 1835 1834 Ireland Coal Miner 1891 Census 56 Apr 05 1891 1835 1834 Ireland Coal Miner (unemployed) Death 60 Apr 29 1894 1834 1833 Coal Miner From this I deduced that he was born After April 5, 1834 and before April 18, 1834, it helped that all of the events took place in April. I have found baptism records for his siblings, but not for him, but this birth date fits nicely between siblings that I have baptisms for. The spreadsheet does the calculations for me.

Excellent use of Correlation of Evidence. Nicely done.
